Top Essentials Every Wholesaler (And Driver) Should Keep in Their Car

Sep 23, 2024
The Wholesalers Handbag?

As someone who's spent decades in the car business, driving thousands of miles across North America and buying and selling thousands of vehicles, I've learned a thing or two about being prepared. My experience has taught me the importance of having the right tools and supplies on hand, whether you're navigating city streets, remote highways, or just making a quick run to the store. Certain items have saved me—and others—more times than I can count.

So, here's my rundown of the top essentials every wholesaler and frankly, every driver should keep in their car. Think of it as a Car Guy survival kit, not just for the unexpected, but for those little moments when being the hero of the day is just a jump start away.

Booster Pack (Like the NOCO Models)

First on the list is a booster pack. These gadgets have come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of bulky, cumbersome packs. Today, they're portable, user-friendly, and mighty. Having one of these in your car means you're not just saving yourself if your battery dies, but you're also able to help out a fellow driver in need. Plus, nothing says "hero" like saving the day and then handing out your business card afterward.

Minor First Aid Kit (With a Twist)

A basic first aid kit is a must, but I've taken mine a step further. Alongside the usual band-aids and alcohol wipes, I've included items like Advil, allergy meds, and quick-dissolve Imodium—because you never know when those might come in handy. And let's not forget Polysporin, tweezers, and scissors for those minor mishaps on the road. Duct tape, wrapped around a pen, is another must-have because, well, it's duct tape. It fixes everything. And while you're at it, throw in some paracord—light, versatile, and can be a lifesaver in the right situation.

Chargers and Tech Essentials

In today's tech-driven world, keeping your devices charged is non-negotiable. I keep a 3-in-1 charger that covers USB, USB-C, and a double lighter adapter in my car. This setup ensures that no matter what device I'm using—or helping to charge for a passenger—I'm covered. I store all of this in a handy Maxpedition pack, along with a Moleskine notepad in case I need to leave a note or write something down while on the phone.

Fluids on the Go

Washer fluid and antifreeze are essential, especially if you're on the road for long periods. But instead of carrying bulky containers, I keep them in 1-liter water bottles, clearly labeled with tape. This method saves space and still provides the necessary fluids in a pinch.

Leatherman Tool and DeWalt 20V Air Compressor

No road kit is complete without a good multi-tool. The Leatherman is my go-to for quick fixes. And if there's one thing that's come in handy more times than I can count, it's my DeWalt 20V air compressor. Compact yet powerful, it's perfect for those low tire pressure moments that always seem to happen at the most inconvenient times.

Tire Patch Aerosol Can

A tire patch aerosol can is one of those things you hope you never need but are grateful to have when you do. A quick fix to get you back on the road, it's an essential part of any road warrior's kit.

The "Just in Case" Kit

This is where I really get into the weeds. A variety of quick-twist license plate screws, plastic shopping bags, Ziplocs, a couple of towels, metal sporks, and even Tabasco sauce—because you never know when you might need a little spice on the go. Speaking about heat..what goes in must come out. Sometimes, in a hurry…, I'd be remiss not to mention the most important item: a flattened roll of toilet paper and biodegradable wet wipes. If you know, you know.

The Mastercraft Tool Kit

Finally, all of this gear needs a sturdy, reliable home. I pack everything into a durable fabric Mastercraft tool kit. It's tough enough to handle the bumps and bruises of the road, and it zips closed, keeping everything organized and within reach.

This kit has been built over 30 years of buying, selling, and driving across North America. It's not just about being prepared for the unexpected—it's about having the right tools at your disposal to make sure you, those with you, and the vehicles get home safely. So next time you hit the road, take a page out of this wholesaler's playbook and pack smart.

You never know when these essentials might turn a minor inconvenience into a quick fix or a moment of panic into a chance to be someone's hero.
