Throw a Leash in Your Glovebox
Aug 27, 2025
I’ve always been a dog guy.
And if you’ve ever owned a dog, you know exactly what your car turns into…
A fur-distribution device with wheels.
No matter how often you vacuum, dog hair wins.
But that’s never stopped me.
Over the years, I’ve lost count of how many dogs I’ve seen running loose.
- Some skittish.
- Some confused.
- Some downright joyful in their freedom.
But all of them? Loved by someone.
A kid or an owner probably freaking out nearby, driving around, yelling their name.
So, somewhere along the line, I made a decision…
Part of my travel kit now includes an extra leash, collar, and a few treats.
Because when I see a dog on the run, I stop.
Every time.
It’s not complicated.
Get their attention.
Don’t chase.
Let them come to you.
Most do.
They can tell you mean well…dogs are dialed in!
I hold out a treat, open hand, crouch down, and wait.
Nine times out of ten, the tail starts going.
A couple of pets, a gentle slip of the collar, and they’ll hop in the car like they’ve known you for years.
(Side note: Dogs love car rides. Just like all of you reading this.)
Then I start slow-rolling the neighborhood.
There’s always a search party.
The moment when the dog sees their person…and the person sees their dog?
That never gets old.
Tail wags. Tears. Sighs of relief.
It’s one of those tiny miracles that only takes about 30 minutes.
Not many investments I know that yield higher dividends… for everyone involved.
So here’s the ask…
Toss a leash in your glovebox.
Maybe a treat or two.
You might end up saving a life.
You’ll definitely make someone’s day.
And you’ll probably get a great story out of it.
Trust me….some of the best road stories start with a dog and a detour.
