Mental Health and the Car Business: A Seasonal Reflection
As the calendar turns to December 24th, I want to take a moment to address something close to my heart…your mental health.
To my readers who are Managers in the car business, I see you. I know what this season looks like for many of you. The weight of your role is immense…owners depend on you to drive profitability, employees rely on your leadership, and families count on your financial and emotional presence. You’re the lynchpin holding so much together. It’s a position many desire and wouldn’t trade for anything…but let’s not sugarcoat it… it can be incredibly isolating.
This time of year brings unique challenges for car people. The shorter days and the pressures of a shortened sales month converge with the stresses of the holiday season. It’s like a pressure cooker with no release valve. I’ve been in the car business long enough to know another universal truth…many of you are notorious last-minute shoppers, scrambling for gifts on Christmas Eve, often because it’s your first day off in weeks. Sound familiar?
I’m here to tell you…You’re not alone in this. Not in the challenges you face, and certainly not in the struggle to hold it all together.
The Amplification Effect
You might have heard the saying, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” I’d argue the reverse is also true. When stress, anxiety, or depression creep into your life, it can amplify…not just for you, but for everyone who depends on you. Whether it’s family, employees, or the owner who signs your checks, the pressure you feel has ripple effects. And during the holidays, those pressures can feel insurmountable.
But here’s the thing… Pressure isn’t permanent. Neither is loneliness. Neither is struggle.
My Journey
I’ve been there myself. There were times I felt like the weight of everything would crush me. I’ve had professional struggles, personal doubts, and seasons of feeling completely stuck. But I didn’t stay there. I sought help…coaches, mentors, and even mastermind groups. It took trying a few coaches before I found one that truly resonated with me. I pushed myself to reach out to friends, build stronger bonds, and join communities of peers.
Those decisions didn’t just help me…they transformed me. They reminded me that the only way out is through. If you’re feeling the weight right now, I want you to know…there are paths forward.
Actionable Steps for You
If you’re struggling this season, here are a few steps you can take to start shifting the tide:
- Find a Coach or Mentor: You don’t have to carry this alone. A coach or mentor can provide perspective, guidance, and accountability. It may take trying a few to find the right fit, but the effort is worth it.
- Join a Community of Peers: Mastermind groups or industry networks can be game-changers. They provide a safe space to share struggles, exchange ideas, and grow together.
- Strengthen Your Bonds: Reach out to friends or family who are outside your immediate work and home pressures. Secure, unbiased connections can be a lifeline.
- Take a Moment for Yourself: Even if it’s just an hour a day, carve out time for self-care…whether it’s a walk, a workout,a morning routine or quiet reflection. Recharge yourself so you can better support those who rely on you.
- Get Ahead for Next Year: If last-minute shopping is your personal tradition (like so many of us in the Car biz) , maybe 2025 can be the year you break it. Small changes to your routine can make a big difference.
